After successfully mapping annual land cover dynamics (Landy), since 2023 Mapbiomas Indonesia has been mapping burned land through Mapbiomas Fire.
Burned land is mapped through analyses of Landsat 8 satellite imagery using Google Earth Engine computation technology integrated with deep learning.
Mapbiomas Fire’s current land fire maps, referred to as Collection 1.0, constitute annual land fire maps for the years 2013 to 2023. Moving forward, in addition to adding annual burned land maps back to 2000 and for forthcoming years, Mapbiomas Indonesia is also planning to create monthly land fire maps, particularly for peak fire months

As mentioned above, Mapbiomas Fire constitutes an initiative or product of Mapbiomas Indonesia. As such, it involves the same network of civil society organizations that make up Mapbiomas Indonesia, namely:
HAKA Aceh
HAKi South Sumatra
GENESIS Bengkulu
SAMPAN West Kalimantan
SAVE OUR BORNEO Central Kalimantan
GREEN OF BORNEO North Kalimantan
KOMIU Central Sulawesi
MNUKWAR West Papua
JERAT Papua
MapBiomas Indonesia is supported by Woods & Wayside International.

Mapbiomas Fire plans to produce and update maps of burned land in Indonesia, both for ongoing years and for improving data produced earlier. Through this plan, Mapbiomas Fire products will be named Collection X.Y., with “X” indicating the product number, usually following the ongoing year, and “Y” indicating the variant of the product in the ongoing year. As the current product (read: 2024) constitutes Mapbiomas Fire’s initial product, it is named Collection 1.0.

Collection 1.0 presents data/maps of land fires in Indonesia from 2013 to 2023. These data and/or maps take the form of:
annual fire maps,
monthly fire maps,
fire frequency maps,
accumulated burned land maps.
Collection 1.0 presents data/maps of land fires in Indonesia from 2013 to 2023. These data and/or maps take the form of Collection 2.0.

Currently, Collection 1.0 only covers data back to 2013. Accordingly, the plan is to backdate Mapbiomas Fire further, to at least the year 2000, in order to obtain more complete and in-depth information on burned land in Indonesia.
In addition to backdating to at least 2000, Mapbiomas Fire also plans to update data by ongoing year through subsequent collections.
The existence of different publicly-accessible satellite images is potentially beneficial, and worth studying and/or exploring in greater depth. For instance, by analyzing Sentinel satellite images, Mapbiomas Indonesia | FIRE plans to release monthly land fire data for ongoing years, as Mapbiomas Brazil | FIRE is now doing.
In line with scientific standards, Mapbiomas Fire also plans to have accuracy tests for forthcoming collections.

Mapbiomas Fire products can be accessed in three ways:
Burned area by island, province, regency/municipality, subdistrict, village, and specified geometric can be downloaded according to the toolkit available in the Google Earth Engine. This makes it easier to export maps in raster formats; and provides statistical data on geometrics and periods in CSV format. Data descriptions are provided in the legend code.

We have already compared Mapbiomas Fire data with similar datasets we were able to access. Comparisons are necessary to look at agreement or disagreement between these datasets, along with their causes.
As far as we know, mapping of burned areas in Indonesia can be differentiated between (1) international initiatives, or Indonesian ones becoming part of such initiatives; and (2) existing initiatives in and/or focusing on Indonesia. Initiatives under the former category consist of MODIS (MCD64A1), Fire CCI, and Global Annual Burned Area Mapping (GABAM); whereas initiatives under the latter category before now have only been conducted or produced by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).
